Sparring
Advancement to Green Stripe and beyond necessitates sparring. While remaining a Yellow Belt for an extended period is possible, addressing any fears is crucial. Our sparring classes prioritize safety, emphasizing light or no contact. All participants must wear protective gear to minimize accidents. Don’t hesitate to share your concerns with your instructor. Feel welcome to observe sparring classes to witness the safety measures in place.
In sparring class, our primary objective is honing reflexes for real-life combat scenarios while fostering mutual growth. To ensure safety, students are instructed to avoid forceful contact, targeting only padded areas during sparring. Nevertheless, the dynamic nature of simultaneous movements poses potential injury risks. Hence, we mandate that every student possesses and consistently wears their own protective padding and gear throughout all sparring sessions. This proactive approach serves to create a secure environment, allowing practitioners to derive maximum benefits from their training experience.
This class exemplifies the uniqueness of our school, aiming to enhance participants’ proficiency in utilizing the complete range of techniques taught. Geared towards students interested in the practical application of Taekwon-do for self-defense, it involves testing against various attack scenarios. Full Range Sparring is essentially a “no rules” environment, although strictly supervised to ensure safety. These sessions are mandatory before testing for a Black Belt. While initially intimidating, these classes authentically simulate self-defense situations, teaching skills for no-rule street conditions and getting up when down. Protective sparring gear is required, with the school providing extra-large gloves to minimize impact.
Sparring is free-form fight practice. Unlike the regular class, where each movement is predictable, in sparring practice two partners practice fighting without knowing in advance what each other are going to try to do. It’s a chance to try out the skills learned in the regular class in a fast-moving environment.
To participate in sparring, students must have individual safety gear, including a helmet, chest guard, gloves, elbow guards, knee pads, shin guards, forearm guards, and a protective cup. We offer a complete package for $289, which includes a school duffel bag, available for purchase at the front desk or via phone by credit card or through online payment link. The delivery time is approximately one week.
To avoid confusion, kindly label each piece of equipment with your name. This precautionary measure prevents misplacement, as all gear looks alike.
Kids age 5-8 have sparring on Thursdays at 4pm.
Age 9-12 are Thursdays at 5pm.
Adults are Wednesday nights at 7pm.
Sparring classes are open to students who have achieved their yellow stripe. Following the attainment of the yellow belt, active participation in sparring becomes a prerequisite for advancing to higher ranks. All age groups, including 5-8, 9-12, and adults, are welcome to join and practice sparring within their respective classes.
